Karen Frank of Bloomberg Businessweek asked me to follow Rahm Emanuel in his new role as the mayor of Chicago. I don’t usually shoot on-the-move documentary pictures but I’m keen to do political portraits and accepted the candid work as part of the deal.
The Photo-J portion worked out fine but getting the Mayor to hold still for a portrait turned out to be something of a challenge. When I asked one of his aids about arranging time for a sitting she laughed and said we’d be lucky to get him to stay in one place for sixty seconds. I was less amused, and after making my argument for a dedicated session multiple times they coordinated five minutes of undivided attention for me.
